Central Municipal Market, Gabrovo

The urban design concept for the reconstruction and modernisation of Gabrovo’s Central Municipal Market combines functionality, sustainability, and a contemporary urban environment. A key element is a new east–west canopy with a green roof, creating a protected market area, improving the microclimate, and contributing to the fulfilment of landscaping requirements.

The canopy incorporates operable frosted skylights for natural ventilation, integrated drainage, and thermowood cladding. The retail areas are organised into pavilions with opening façades, providing flexible use, security outside operating hours, and improved comfort for vendors throughout the year. Some of the pavilions are intended for food and beverage establishments with outdoor terraces, while the remaining units provide more retail spaces than the minimum required.

Along the southern boundary, new two-storey volumes conceal the existing party walls and accommodate offices, shops, small cafés, and administrative premises. A recreational area is formed in the eastern part of the site, featuring seating areas, preserved linden trees, and a renovated drinking fountain, in close proximity to the market’s administrative building.

The concept fully meets the functional and area requirements while also allowing the car park to be used flexibly for a farmers’ market. Parking spaces are positioned beneath canopies fitted with photovoltaic panels, providing protection from weather conditions and potentially covering the market’s energy needs. The proposal also includes underground waste containers, universal accessibility throughout the site, and comprehensive landscaping of the surrounding area.
