Municipal Market, Bansko

The conceptual design for the “Sunday Market” in Bansko aims to transform the traditional market space into a contemporary, attractive, and multifunctional urban area. The market will retain its role as a meeting place for local residents and tourists, while also being actively used beyond market days.

The project envisages a complete renewal of the paving within the market area and the adjacent streets, as well as a new canopy with movable market tables and display stands. The canopy is designed as a semi-circular colonnade, forming a new square and emphasising the main pedestrian approaches to the space. Beneath it, 45 market stalls are arranged, including 10 permanent ones, while the rest are flexible and allow the area to be cleared for various events. The new square will host cultural, public, and festival events, complementing the other public spaces in the centre of Bansko.

On the eastern side, a single-storey building is proposed, containing a café, a terrace, and storage for the market equipment, together with new public toilets with green roofs. The existing green area is transformed into a recreation zone, where the water channel running through it becomes the main compositional feature.

The project also includes a waste collection area, a new fountain with a character typical of Bansko, and urban furniture coordinated with the already renovated central streets and square. The proposal creates a functional connection between the market, the adjacent commercial premises, the central square, and the linear park along Gotse Delchev Street.
